About Acupuncturists

Used in China for over 2500 years, acupuncture is an ancient system of healing developed as part of the traditional medicine of China, Japan, and other Eastern countries. The earliest records of acupuncture date back over 3,000 years and today there are over 3 million practitioners worldwide.

Traditional acupuncture is based on the principle that our health depends on the balanced functioning of the body’s energy, known as Qi. When we are in perfect health all the energy runs harmoniously throughout the body. When an illness arises the flow of energy becomes disturbed and this can manifest in a diverse array of symptoms. Using very fine needles, acupuncture aims to correct the flow of energy and by doing this address the manifest symptoms.

Blocked Qi (energy) may relate to areas on the body that are tender to touch, particularly cold or warm, or a different colour. These clues help practitioners decide which points need to be treated in order to bring the body back into balance.

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat a wide variety of conditions as well as in pain relief. Conditions include:

  • Headaches, Migraine, Facial pain
  • Limbs and Muscles - Rheumatism, Lumbago, Back-pain, Arthritis, Fibrosis
  • Digestion - Stomach Ulcers, Wind, Gastritis, Heartburn, Indigestion, Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhoea
  • Respiratory System - Asthma, Shortness of breath
  • Circulatory System - Angina, Palpitations, Poor circulation
  • Sexual system - Painful periods, Hot flushes, Pelvic pain, Menopause
  • Nervous system - Depression, Anxiety, Neuralgia
  • Dermatitis - All kinds of skin complaint
  • Ear, nose and throat - Hay fever, Sinusitis, Catarrh

Acupuncture should not be a painful treatment. Very fine needles are used and left in for approximately twenty minutes during which time the patient can relax. The acupuncturist may stimulate the needles manually or with slight electric current to ensure that the correct effect is achieved.
